Small Repairs That Make
a Big Difference

When Do You Need a Filling?

Not all cavities hurt — but they do need attention.
You might need a filling if you have tooth sensitivity (especially to hot, cold, or sweet), visible holes or dark spots, chipped teeth, or discomfort when biting or chewing. Sometimes, decay is found early during a routine check-up — long before symptoms begin. Acting early means we can restore your tooth quickly, simply, and painlessly.

What Exactly is a Filling?

Restoring shape, strength, and protection.
A filling is a restorative treatment used to repair a tooth that’s been damaged by decay, minor cracks, or wear. We clean out the damaged area and then “fill” it with a high-quality material that restores the tooth’s natural form and function — preventing further decay and strengthening the tooth.

What Type of
Filling Will I Need?

One size doesn’t fit all — and we offer the full range.

  • Composite Fillings (Tooth-Coloured): The most common type, ideal for small to medium restorations. They match your natural tooth shade and are done in a single visit.
  • Inlays & Onlays: For larger areas of damage, we may recommend porcelain inlays or onlays. These are custom-made in a lab and bonded into place over two visits. They’re strong, beautiful, and long-lasting.
  • Temporary Fillings: Sometimes used between treatments or when a tooth needs time to settle before a permanent solution is placed.
  • Other Materials: Though less commonly used today, options like gold, glass ionomer, and metal amalgam are still available for specific cases.

We’ll always recommend the material that’s best suited to your tooth, lifestyle, and cosmetic preferences.

Technology-Enhanced Accuracy

Because millimetres matter.
At Crescent Clinics, precision is everything. That’s why we use dental microscopes during restorative procedures — allowing your dentist to work at high magnification for the most accurate results. This level of detail helps preserve more of your natural tooth and ensures a cleaner, longer-lasting restoration.

We also invest heavily in modern dental technology — from digital scanning to high-quality restorative materials — because we believe our patients deserve the very best.

How Long Does
a Filling Take?

Quick, easy, and back to your day.
A typical composite filling takes around 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the size of the cavity and its location. Inlays and onlays, which are crafted in the lab, involve two visits — one for preparation and one for final placement.

Does It Hurt?

Not at all — you’ll be completely numb.
Fillings are done under local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel pain during the procedure. Afterward, your gums or tooth may feel a little sensitive for a few days, especially when eating or brushing, but this usually settles quickly.

How Long Do Fillings Last?

With proper care, many years.
Composite fillings can last up to 10 years or more, and porcelain inlays/onlays even longer. Their longevity depends on oral hygiene, bite forces, and where in the mouth the filling is located. To keep your restorations in top shape, we recommend:

  • Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
  • Daily flossing
  • Regular six-monthly check-ups and cleans
